The principle activity of United Utilities is to regulate water and wastewater networks in the north west of England and to regulate electricity distribution. The group structure of United Utilities is divided into three main divisions:
Operating the electricity, water and wastewater networks is the primary strategy of United Utilities, but they also use their core utility skills to manage other infrastructure assets.
Multi-utility connections are another area that United Utilities have explored. They offer the opportunity to have gas, water, mains electricity, telecoms and other services installed by just one company. By providing all mains and services in a single package, they simplify site operations and offer savings in time, admin and cost.
The water division of the group is one of its largest and is said to be the UK's largest operator of water systems. It owns and operates the water network in North West England and works tirelessly to supply clean, safe water to customers. The catchment areas in the North West collect and store water in 184 reservoirs before treating it and delivering it to homes and businesses.
The company covers a population of almost seven million people and supplies water to 2.9 million households and business premises. This requires that United Utilities maintains a network of 40,000 kilometres of water mains, 1,444 kilometres of aqueduct and 113 water treatment works. The wastewater network treats 2,200 million litres of wastewater each via a network of 39,000 kilometres of sewers.
The company also manages water networks in Wales and around the world they are supplying and improving water services in many countries around the world.
United utilities distribute electricity to homes and businesses on behalf of supply companies. Overhead power lines and underground cables are used to supply electricity to the North West including the Lakes, Lancashire and Manchester. The network covers a variety of terrain including vast countryside but almost three quarters of the network is underground.
As well as the electricity distribution network of United Utilities, they are also involved in:
