Reuters was founded by Paul Julius Reuter, a German born immigrant in 1851. He had found a niche in delivering the latest news and information using carrier pigeons. Originally he used a fleet of 45 pigeons to deliver news and stock prices between Brussels and his home town Aachen in Germany in just two hours.
In 1851 he arrived in London and opened an office at 1 Royal Exchange Building in the heart of the financial centre and close to the main telegraph offices. He had established a reputation for speed and accuracy and so started to transmit stock market quotations and news between Paris and London over the new Dover - Calais submarine telegraph cable. The company continued to expand and in 1865 Reuters Telegraph Company was registered as a limited company.
In 1984 Reuters was floated as a public company on the London Stock Exchange and on the NASDAQ in the US. The agency has remained independent and neutral despite pressure from the British government during the world war to serve British interests. When it was established as a private company in 1941 it was formed with independent trustees so that they could enforce its neutrality.
The technology that Reuters utilises today allows access to real-time data on 5.5 million financial records including equities, bonds and derivatives from 258 exchanges and over-the-counter markets. Reuters has become one of the most well respected global information companies because market prices, news and data are updated as much as 8,000 times a second and distributed instantaneously.
The company provides historical information on over 40,000 companies. It is organised in four divisions for the financial industry:
