Already the major businesses of GUS possess very clear strategy for growth and expansion having achieved good positions within their markets. They each possess highly focused management teams that have developed strong propositions for their customers. Therefore GUS will continue to reposition themselves around their three major businesses.

The History of GUS

Founded by Abraham and George Rose in 1900, GUS was originally a mail order business known as Universal Stores. In 1930, the company had become the leading mail order business within the UK, also changing its name to The Great Universal Stores Ltd.

GUS underwent a long period of expansion between 1932 and 1950s resulting in 80 companies within the group, ranging from clothing and furniture manufacturers, retail chains and mail order businesses, both within the UK and overseas. Burberry was acquired in 1955 by GUS, along with the Lewis Stores Group in South Africa in 1949.

In 1980 GUS launched a new division, CCN, providing information services. This division previously provided the group with internal support for its mail order operations.

GUS sold its manufacturing and High Street retail businesses in the late 1980s.

Then in 1996 and 1998, GUS acquired Experian and Argos.

2001 saw the group change its name from Great Universal stores to GUS Plc.
