Emap Plc
Emap plc is a media company whose purpose is to create 'must-have' entertainment and information which can be delivered to every home and business within defined communities.
Emap started life as a local newspaper company in 1947. Today Emap is a media company whose purpose is to create "must-have" entertainment and information which can be delivered to every home and business within defined communities.
Emap Advertising was created to provide advertisers with ground-breaking media solutions that unlock greater value from Emap's multi-media brands. Launched in April 2000, it acts as one point of contact for the creative media solutions across any, or all of the various media platforms and 40 brands.
Brands that use Emap such as Kiss, Q, Kerrang and Smash Hits are now truly multi media; existing as radio stations & programmes; music tv channels; online sites, text message services & events such as the Smash Hits poll winners party and Q awards. This enables advertisers to effectively target valuable audiences in a consistent brand environment. With such a wide range of media in the portfolio, Emap Advertising is able to provide advertisers with access and unique insight to its markets and audiences.
Emap Consumer Media comprises the majority of the company's consumer magazine portfolio in the UK and overseas, with the exception of France. Over 70 titles in the UK, many with market leading positions, serve the automotive, special interest, women's, men's, entertainment and young women's markets.
Emap is generally recognised as having a relatively low impact on the environment and is included in the FTSE4Good Index where it is categorised as a low impact company. Having no manufacturing base, Emap’s principal environmental impact revolves around its purchase of paper (approx. 163,000 metric tonnes per annum), the contracting out of both printing and process waste and its general energy consumption.
Emap is committed to reducing its environmental impact by encouraging the Emap Group’s paper and print suppliers to adopt a responsible approach to the environment; by reducing waste throughout the production process; and by pursuing sound environmental practices in collaboration with trade associations and other business organisations. With these points in mind, the Emap Group actively supports a number of industry initiatives.
Emap has also actively supported, again through the PPA, the Mass Flow Analysis of the magazine sector. The purpose of this Emap study is to inform planning and decision making with regard to environmental sustainability.
The Emap Group works closely with its key printers to monitor and improve process waste performance. Pre-press technological advancement, such as computer to plate, has allowed reductions in make-ready waste and improving press technology is expected to drive further reductions in process waste.
The Emap Group continues to fulfil its recovery and recycling obligations, as required under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997, in the UK through the national compliance scheme run by Valpak Ltd.
