The BG Group possesses core skills in every aspect of the gas chain from the reservoir to the burner tip. BG Group business is the discovery, extraction, transmission, distribution and supply of natural gas to existing and developing markets around the world. BG Group core skills include exploration and production, transmission, through pipeline systems or LNG liquefaction and transport, as well as the creation and distribution of energy through gas-fired power generation.

The heightened awareness of environmental degradation throughout the world now favours natural gas as the fossil fuel of choice. As a fossil fuel, gas is clean and abundant and with the application of BG Group's core skills, it can be affordable.

The demand for gas is projected to grow over the next decade outstripping the growth in demand for other major sources of energy. With an escalation of liberalisation in the large, more mature markets and the vast unmet demand for energy in the developing economies, they - with BG Group expertise in natural gas - will be rich in opportunities.

Markets are being liberalised, technologies are improving and gas is being put forward as the fuel of choice. The world's need for energy is increasing and BG Group is well placed to take advantage of the opportunities available by drawing on its skills across the gas chain. There has never been a better time to be in the gas business and at the BG Group; natural gas is BG Group's business.

BG Group is principally engaged in the development, management and supply of existing and emerging gas markets around the world. In February 1997 the shareholders of British Gas plc approved the de-merger of Centrica plc. British Gas plc was renamed BG Group.

In December 1999 BG plc completed a financial restructuring that resulted in the creation of a new parent company, BG Group plc.

On 23rd October 2000 BG Group plc completed the de-merger of Lattice Group plc creating two separate companies.

All BG Group power stations are gas-fired and have long-term Power Purchase Agreements, under which payment is based largely on availability, not the actual level of output.
