The Boots Group are immensely proud of the long and successful business history, which has developed in the face of an ever-changing economic, social and political climate in the UK and world-wide. Not many companies today can claim that their core business activity - the provision of healthcare products and services - benefits from the cumulative experience of trading in the 19th, 20th and now 21st centuries.

John Boots was born in Radcliffe-On-Trent in 1815 and his early life was spent as an agricultural labourer on local farms. He travelled to attend services at the Wesleyan chapels in the Lace Market area of Nottingham and by the time of the 1851 Census had moved to Woolpack Lane in Hockley. It was a poor area and John Boots became involved in chapel affairs and local schemes to improve living conditions within his community.

Herbal remedies were popular with the labouring poor, who could not afford the services of a physician. John Boots' mother had used herbs for healing and he may also have been familiar with remedies published in John Wesley's herbal Primitive Physic. In 1849, with the assistance of his father-in-law and the support of the local Methodist community, John opened The British and American Botanic Establishment at 6 Goose Gate, hoping to provide physical comfort to the needy, as well as a reasonable living for his family.

Boots The Chemists is trading well and fully meeting their expectations. They continue to see the positive effects of the improvements and investment they are making in the business. Boots Healthcare International is showing consistently good performance.Sales growth in Boots The Chemists in the quarter was 4.7%. Dispensing sales, up 8%, and strong cosmetics and fragrance growth, up 6%, were key contributors.

The expanded Boots 'Sunshop' showed excellent sales growth helped by the hot weather in June, which also benefited sales of Boots Food. This growth in Boots Food and in Baby merchandise was offset by continued decline in Boots Photo services.
