Electronic filing
Electronic Filing was introduced as a means of transferring statutory forms and information to Companies House.
Documents can be filed electronically 24 hours a day, but documents can only be processed by Companies House within normal working hours. Companies House aim to process 90% of electronically filed documents within 24 hours of receipt to the point of where they will either accept the document or reject it. They then send out an acceptance or rejection message via e-mail to the sender.
What do you need to file Companies House forms electronically?
- Electronic Filing Credit Account
- Connection to the Internet
- E-mail facility
If as a Company you want to start filing electronically you must register. To register Companies House require that you complete an Online Filing Services Credit Account Application and send it to the Companies House Finance section.

Companies House will then create an individual account, allocate a credit limit to your company and send you out a start up pack with everything you need to get going. Certain documents require a fee on submission and others are free of charge. Companies send out monthly invoices which will state the fees and request payment within a certain period. An example of a document that require a fee are the Annual Return which costs £15 to submit.
The Electronic Filing Service supports many of the forms that must be submitted to Companies House:
- Appointment of Director or secretary
- Termination of appointment of a Director or secretary
- Changes to Directors details
- Annual Return
- Change is situation of the Registered Office address
- Location of register of members
- Return of allotment of shares
- Increase in nominal capital
- Dormant company accounts
The Electronic Filing Service is simple and easy to use once set up. However the existing paper based document submission continues to operate in conjunction with the Electronic Filing Service.
